40K determination to estimate the concentration of total potassium

Description

Total potassium concentration has been determined by measuring the 1.46 MeV gamma ray emitted during 40K decay. In nature there are three K isotopes: 39K, 41K, and 40K, this last is radioactive with a half life of 109 years. In nature, 40K is in 0.0117% and this is measured in order to estimate the total amount of potassium. Potassium plays and comporting role in growing and reproduction of animals and plants. Due to decay properties and because it is essential to humans 40K is important for radiological protection. Due to secular equilibrium the γ-ray emission rate of 40K is proportional to total 40K concentration and can be used to estimate the total amount of K. In this work a set of 40K calibrating sources has been prepared and was utilized with NaI (Tl)-based spectrometric γ-ray system to measure the 40K concentration in several samples; with this information total K was evaluated.
