Plasma-materials interaction studies
Description
Fusion power reactor first-wall candidate materials have been exposed to hot deuterium plasma bombardment (1021 eV/cm2). Various pure metals, stainless steels, and complex alloys have been tested. We observed blister formation, preferential erosion at grain boundaries, some surface cracking and some surface melting, and a decrease in ductility, characteristic of hydrogen embrittlement
