Neutral hydrogen in lenticular galaxies with faint discs

Description

Ten SO galaxies with very faint discs but normal (bright) central regions were selected from deep IIIaJ plates taken for the ESO/SRC Southern Sky Survey. Radio 21-cm line observations showed that two of these have large amounts of H I gas, with Msub(H)/Lsub(B) approximately > 0.5 solar units. The most hydrogen-rich galaxy in the sample, UKS 0016-579, has Msub(H)/Lsub(B) = 2.7 solar mass/solar luminosity. Combined with the results from other surveys of catalogued SO galaxies, these observations indicate that excess H I occurs preferentially in lenticulars with relatively faint discs. These H I-rich systems form a distinct morphological group. (author)
