Design concepts for the ASTROMAG cryogenic system
Description
The cryogenic system used to cool the superconducting magnet for the ASTROMAG Particle Astrophysics Facility is described. A liquid He II storage concept is proposed which would permit cryogenic lifetimes of up to three years between refills. The concept uses superfluid helium pumped by the thermomechanical effect. In-orbit resupply of the storage tank is also proposed. A method for charging and discharging the magnet with minimum helium loss using split gas-cooled leads is discussed. The use of a stirling cycle cryocooler to extend cryostat storage life is also evaluated
