Moessbauer study of the corrosion of mild steel due to prolonged immersion in deionized water

  • 1. Pakistan Inst. of Nuclear Science and Technology, Islamabad (Pakistan)

Description

The corrosion of mild steel as a result of 3 years of immersion in deionized water, using Moessbauer results, indicates that γ-FeOOH, α-FeOOH and Fe3O4 are formed as corrosion products. It is shown that purified water will produce α-FeOOH only when the exposure time is long. It is proposed that ferrihydrite, which is formed as an intermediate corrosion product, is converted to γ-FeOOH, which in turn is converted to α-FeOOH and Fe3O4. (author) 7 refs.; 1 fig.; 2 tabs
