Description
A first proposal is presented on how to test and use the Stern-Gerlach-induced selfpolarization mechanism (''Spin-Splitter'' effect) in HERA-p. The paper is divided into two parts. First it is shown that the polarization can be built up at the edges of the beam within a few minutes. The effect can be measured by a carbon fibre polarimeter. After the demonstration of the effect and after the basic measurements the knowledge of the induced particle and spin motions can be used to polarize the beam completely within a few minutes. (orig.)
