Progress towards boron neutron capture therapy at Harwell

  • 1. UKAEA Harwell Lab.

Description

Studies at Harwell aimed at the treatment of certain forms of cancer by boron neutron capture using epithermal neutron beams have concentrated on measuring the neutron spectra from experimental beams and optimising filter components. Biological irradiations in these beams have produced valuable results which suggest that therapy in such a beam would be possible. Conceptual designs of larger, more intense epithermal beams for a possible therapy facility have been evaluated by Monte Carlo neutronic modelling. (author). 11 refs, 5 figs
