Description

The neutron time-of-flight spectrum from the reaction π- p → π0 + n was measured in order to study the acceleration mechanisms in the atomic cascade of pionic hydrogen. For the first time, discrete ''high-energy'' components up to about 200 eV were found in hydrogen gas. The earlier findings of discrete components in liquid hydrogen are confirmed in a model-independent way, and for the first time, indications of transitions with Δn = 2 are observed. (orig.)
