Control rods for nuclear reactors

Description

Purpose: To obtain a control rod of high reactivity worth compensating the neutron absorption performance of the control rod using neutron absorbers such as hafnium with less neutron absorption as compared with boron carbide. Constitution: In addition to main neutron absorbers constituting a neutron absorber rod, second neutron absorber are disposed surrounding the neutron absorber rod. The second neutron absorbers usable herein include long-life type neutron absorbers such as hafnium and europium, as well as cadmium. Ag-In-Cd alloy and stainless steels incorporated with boron. In the case of a control rod using boron carbide, the life can be improved without imparing the feature thereof of being inexpensive and light weight. Furthermore, in the case of a control rod with a low reactivity worth, since the reactivity can be added with no increase in the weight, the effective utilization of extensive hafnium is possible.
