Search for the rare B0 → K*0τ+τ- decay at the LHCb experiment
Description
A search for the rare B0 → K*0τ+τ- decay is performed using 9 fb-1 of proton-proton (pp) collision data collected at the LHCb experiment at CERN. The decay is reconstructed using two final states: the fully hadronic one, in which both τ leptons decay in the τ- → π-π+π-(π0)ντ channel, and the mixed hadronic-leptonic, in which one τ decays in the aforementioned channel and the other in the τ- → μ-ντν-barμ channel. The measure of the branching ratio is performed relatively to that of the normalization mode B0 → D-(→ π-K+π-)D+s(→ K+K-π+). The full event selection makes use of Boosted Decision Trees (BDT) based on kinematic and isolation variables in order to reduce the amount of background. A binned maximum likelihood fit on the output of a BDT classifier is performed to extract the number of signal events in the data. The data distribution is still blind, however an expected upper limit in the case where no signal is observed is computed to be 3.2. 10-4 at 95% CL. (author)

Une recherche de la desintegration rare B0 → K*0 tau+ tau- est effectuee a l'aide de 9/fb de donnees de collision proton-proton recueillies avec l'experience LHCb au CERN. La desintegration est reconstruite a l'aide de deux etats finaux: l'etat entierement hadronique, dans lequel les deux leptons τ se desintegrent dans le canal τ- → π-π+π-(π0)ντ, et l'etat mixte hadronique-leptonique, dans lequel un tau se desintegre dans le canal precite et l'autre dans le canal τ- → μ-ντν-barμ. La mesure du rapport d'embranchement est effectuee relativement a celle du mode de normalisation B0→ D-(→ π-K+π-)D+s(→ K+K-π+). La selection des evenements utilise des classificateurs d'analyse multivariee Boosted Decision Tree (BDT) bases sur des variables cinematiques et d'isolement afin de reduire la quantite de bruit de fond. Un ajustement sur un dernier BDT est effectue afin d'extraire le nombre d'evenements de signal dans les donnees. La distribution des donnees est encore masquee, mais une limite superieure attendue dans le cas ou aucun signal n'est observe est calculee comme etant de 3,2 x 10-4 a 95 % CL. (auteur)
