Calculation of tritium breeding ratio in a slab geometry using monte Carlo method

Description

The purpose of project is to develop a computer program for calculating tritium breeding ratio in the slab geometry using Monte Carlo technique. Different reactions of neutron with /sup 6/Li and oxygen were studied. Considering a point isotropic neutron source and first-one-dimensional slab of pure lithium a computer program in FORTRAN-77 was developed to calculate tritium breeding ratio assuming only two types of interactions. of neutron with the slab material. The name given to the code was TCUM-1. Then a program TCUM-2 was developed to calculate tritium breeding ratio in two one-dimensional slabs of natural lithium taking into accounts almost all the interactions of neutrons with the lithium in 0-14.1MeV energy range. In the last a program TCUM-3 was developed, which calculates tritium breeding ratio in two one-dimensional slabs of natural lithium or lithium oxide. The converged value of the tritium breeding ratio was found 1.56 and 1.34 in case of lithium and lithium oxide slab respectively, where the internationally recognized values are 1.25 and 1.19. Tritium breeding ratio increases with the thickness of slab and saturates. It was also observed that tritium breeding ratio decreases with an increase in the enrichment of /sup 6/Li. (author)
