Parabiosis, radiation and carcinogenesis in the rat
Description
Parabiosis extended the survival time of rats exposed to 1000 R of x radiation when the partner was shielded and enabled the appraisal of radiation carcinogenesis following application of a radiation dose normally in the lethal range. The incidence of leukemia, breast cancer in females, and osteogenic sarcoma in irradiated pariabionts was compared with that of their shielded partners. Results showed that irradiated partners not only developed more tumors by 300 to 900 days post-irradiation but developed tumors about two months earlier than either their partners or other control animals and many irradiated animals developed multiple tumors.
