Control rod
Description
Purpose: To prolong the nuclear and mechanical lifetime of a control rod by using a member having large neutron absorption ability for a tube for containing a neutron absorber. Constitution: A neutron absorber made of rare earth metals such as gadolinium or the like having a large absorptivity for thermal neutrons is contained in a tube made of hafnium or the like having large absorptivity for epithermal neutrons, and is sealed. The above neutron absorber and the material forming the tube have a (n, γ) reaction. Since neutrons will be effectively absorbed by the thus formed control rod, the nuclear and mechanical lifetime of the control rod can be prolonged. (Aizawa, K.)
