The next decade of physics with PHENIX

Description

The first decade of RHIC operations provided striking new insights into QCD under extreme conditions and on the gluon contribution to the proton's spin. I will discuss the physics anticipated from PHENIX in the next 5 years, and plans for evolution of PHENIX capabilities thereafter. The new upgrade will allow us to address a suite of entirely new questions elucidating the fundamental properties of the quark gluon plasma and transverse spin physics of partons inside protons. A common theme in these goals is the interplay between perturbative and nonpertubative QCD, and experimental control of the relative importance of strong and weak coupling.
