Developing a global model of magnetospheric substorms

Description

Competing models of magnetospheric substorms are discussed. The definitions of the three substorm phases are presented, and the advantages and drawbacks of the near-earth X-line model, magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling model, low-latitude boundary layer model, and thermal catastrophe model are examined. It is shown that the main challenge to achieving a quantitative understanding of the magnetospheric signatures of substorms is to understand the anomalous dissipation processes in collisionless plasmas. 59 refs
