The simulation of the kinetic behaviour of the neutron density and distribution in a nuclear power reactor is an important part of any analysis and design study concerned with reactor control and safety systems. The process of selecting the correct technique to fulfill the requirements of a particular application is analysed and a number of general observations are made. A more detailed comparison is made of the two approximation approaches which can potentially yield the greatest cost savings; namely the model and nodal techniques
