Description

Full text: Ceria (CeO2) and rare earth (RE)-doped ceria (Ce1−xRExO2−x/2) mixed oxides are important materials in significant environmental applications such as the three-way catalysts (TWC) and the electrolyte and anode materials for solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology. In the present work, the RE-doped ceria (RE: Gd, Sm, Tb and Pr ) system was studied. All samples were characterized by XRD, X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) and scanning and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (SEM and HRTEM). In order to determine the effects of RE content on reduction behaviour, catalysts were studied by in situ XRD and XANES (Ce L3-edge) experiments carried out under a 5%H2/He atmosphere. The results obtained were fundamental to understand the influence of Ce4+/ Ce3'+ redox couple in nanostructured RE-doped ceria for catalytic applications. (author)
