Application of leak-before-break concept to integrity and safety of PWRs piping

Description

The general requirements and methodology used during the application of leak-before-break to PWRS ferritic steel piping of primary coolant circuits are presented. A complex of measures including a choice of material, design, manufacturing, installation and operational conditions for a piping system in VVER-1000 plant ensures reliable execution of the break exclusion principles. The structural integrity of safety-related ferritic steel piping systems ensure the applicability of LBB to the actual design against dynamic effects resulting from a postulated large diameter pipe break. The test failure loads were well above those predicted by LBB flaw evaluation procedure. (orig./DG)
