The potential radiological consequences of THORP

Creators

  • 1. National Radiological Protection Board, Harwell (United Kingdom)

Description

The Thermal Oxide Reprocessing Plant (THORP) was built in Sellafield for the reprocessing of enriched uranium oxide in 1992. There was a public outcry concerning potential radiological consequence of radioactive effluents from this plant. As a result, there were several assessments of the possible detriment to the local population arising from the proposed discharges. The information presented in this paper, on the radiological impact of proposed Sellafield discharges, is taken from two National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB) assessments. 6 refs, 3 tabs
