Instrumentation and research at HASYLAB
Description
This paper reports that at the Synchrotronstrahlungslabor HASYLAB, 32 experimental stations are operated for approximately 40 weeks per year. The DORIS ring, with electron energies of 3.7 GeV or 5.3 GeV, provides intense synchrotron radiation beams with photon energies up to 150 KeV for research in physics, chemistry, biology and medicine. Three wigglers and undulators emit superior intensities in the soft and hard X-ray range. In the second half of 1990, one quarter (75 m) of the circumference of the DORIS ring will be reconstructed to provide seven 4m-long straight sections for additional insertion devices. The instrumentation in the laboratory covers the whole range from visible light to hard X-rays. However, due to the spectral characteristics of the high energy ring, the majority of the beam lines is optimized for research with X-rays. The scientific program is very broad, ranging from basic research to applications in industry and medicine. Among the fields developing most rapidly are: time resolved spectroscopies with VUV and soft X-rays, surface diffraction of X-rays, protein crystallography, inelastic X-ray scattering, powder diffraction and small angle scattering
