The electrical resistivity and the self-potential methods applied to contaminated sites

Description

The purpose of this work is to demonstrate that electrical resistivity and self-potential methods can provide spatial information about the fluid conductivity and the redox potential of a contaminant plume. These methods can therefore be used to optimize the implantation of piezometers. The application of the electrical resistivity tomography to the Entressen landfill (Provence) provided a map of the fluid conductivity of the aquifer, which helped us to determine the extension of the contaminant plume. The self-potential signals, which are passively measured over contaminated sites, are associated with two main mechanisms, which are the fluid flow (streaming potential) and the presence of organic-rich contaminants in an aquifer ('electro-redox' phenomenon). Strong electrical potential anomalies have been evidenced above contaminated sites, but no physical explanations have been proposed. Therefore, we have developed a natural (bio)-geo-battery model, in which bacteria allow the transfer of electron between the reduced and the oxidized parts of the aquifer. The resulting current density produces self potential anomalies recordable at the ground surface. In order to validate this model, we have realized self potential experiments on two contaminated sites (Entressen in Provence and Trecate in Italy), and on a sandbox with sulfato-reducing bacteria. Both the field and laboratory results are in accordance with the geo-battery model, showing a linear coupling between the self potential signals and the redox potential. (author)

Abstract (French)

Le potentiel redox et la conductivite du fluide d'un panache de contamination sont deux parametres clefs pour la surveillance d'un site contamine. L'objectif de ce travail de these est de montrer que les methodes de resistivite electrique et de potentiel spontane peuvent fournir des informations spatialisees sur la conductivite du fluide et le potentiel redox d'un panache de contamination. Ces methodes permettent ainsi de minimiser et d'optimiser l'implantation de piezometres de controle. L'application de la methode de resistivite electrique sur le site d'Entressen en Provence (C.E.T. de Classe 2) a permis d'obtenir une carte de la conductivite du fluide de l'aquifere, definissant ainsi l'extension du panache de contamination. Les signaux de potentiel spontane mesures sur les sites contamines sont associes a l'ecoulement de l'eau dans le sous-sol (phenomene d'electrofiltration) et a la presence de contaminants organiques (phenomene que nous appelons 'electro-redox'). Les etudes anterieures avaient mis en evidence l'existence d'anomalies de potentiel spontane aux abords de sites contamines, sans pour autant parvenir a expliquer physiquement ce phenomene. Nous avons donc developpe un modele de (bio)-geobatterie naturelle, dans lequel les bacteries jouent le role de transfert d'electrons entre la zone reduite du panache et la zone oxydee. Le courant electrique qui en resulte est a l'origine des anomalies de potentiel electrique mesurees a la surface du sol. Pour valider ce modele, nous avons realise des experiences de terrain (Entressen en Provence et Trecate en Italie) ainsi que des experiences en cuve en presence de bacteries sulfato-reductrices. Les resultats de terrain et de laboratoire sont en accord avec le modele, montrant un couplage lineaire entre potentiel spontane et potentiel redox. (auteur)
