Generation and Heating of Plasma by Beam-Plasma Interaction

  • 1. Institute of Plasma Physics, Czechoslovak Academy Of Sciences, Prague, Czechoslovakia (Czech Republic)

Description

The excitation of high-frequency fields in beam-plasma systems, their absorption in the plasma and their effect on the plasma parameters have been investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The experiments have been performed in a homogeneous as well as in a mirror-type magnetic field, and with various electron beams. In a homogeneous magnetic field, the frequency and wavelength of the excited waves are in good agreement with the linear theory, non-linear effects causing relaxation in space and time. Strong absorption of the excited waves is due to the radial inhomogeneity of the plasma, and it occurs near to cyclotron harmonics. Using these facts, the successive stages of plasma buildup from neutral gas have been clarified, and the conditions for breakdown have been established. In a mirror-type magnetic field, the spectrum of the instabilities is the same as in a uniform field, but the oscillations are localized in regions where the inhomogeneity is small. Effective heating of electrons occurs if the excited waves are absorbed in the containment region and the particles gain perpendicular energy. Strong absorption of the waves occurs again as a result of inhomogeneities. In addition to the radial density inhomogeneity, the absorption is also affected by the longitudinal inhomogeneity of both the magnetic field and plasma density. The waves excited in the containment region are absorbed by the warm plasma electrons in regions where the resonance condition ω = n-tildeωce can be reached. The waves excited in the mirrors can be absorbed by the inhomogeneities of either the magnetic field or the plasma density. The limitations of beam-plasma interactions for plasma heating are discussed. (author)
