Description

In this paper an overview of the LAMPF nucleon-nucleon program is given. The LAMPF facilities include polarized proton and neutron beams, variable energy over the range 300 to 800 MeV, spin precession to allow arbitrary spin orientation of the incident beam, polarized targets, and carbon polarimeters. The principal goals of the measurements have been the determination of the phase shifts and amplitudes for the pp, np, and pd systems, the understanding of energy dependent structures in nucleon-nucleon reactions near 800 MeV, and the testing of fundamental symmetry principles at medium energies. The expected development in 1988 of a high intensity polarized proton ion source should provide a much more intense polarized neutron beam than has been previously available, and should allow, for the first time, detailed studies of elastic and inelastic n-p reactions. Experiments planned for the next few years will be discussed
