Kinetic study of the oxidation of uranium (III) by europium (III) in acidic aqueous solutions

  • 1. Tokyo Inst. of Tech. (Japan). Research Lab. of Nuclear Reactor

Description

The reaction rates of the oxidation of U(III) by Eu(III) were measured in aqueous HClO4-NaClO4 solutions at the ionic strength of 2.0 and the temperature range of 10-25 0C. The rate law was expressed by -d[U(III)]/dt = (k0 + ksub(-1) [H+] -1) [U(III)] [Eu(III)]. The activation parameters of k0 and k-1-paths are ΔHsub(0)sup(not equal) = 7.92 +- 0.32kcalmol-1, ΔSsub(0)sup(not equal) = -40.5 +- 1.1 cal K-1 mol-1, ΔHsub(-1)sup(not equal) = 7.82 +- 0.24 kcal mol-1 and ΔSsub(-1)sup(not equal) = -44.8 +- 0.8 calK-1 mol-1, respectively. The results obtained are compared with those reported for the oxidations of U(III) by other metal ions. (author)
