Studies on the oxidation state of uranium in U1-yGdyO2 solid solution
Description
The chemical state of uranium in Gd doped uranium dioxide (U1-yGdyO2-δ) was investigated. Hypostoichiometric U1-yGdyO2-δ was obtained when sintered at 1700 .deg. C in H2 atmosphere, representing anion defect (oxygen vacancy model). Oxidation state of uranium was studied by XPS and confirmed by the slope of lattice parameter. In order to obtain lattice parameter, powder XRD was used and calculated by using least square method. From this experiments, it was concluded that the addition of Gd causes oxidation of U4+ to U+5 rather than U6+ for charge compensation
