Mass spectrometry studies of fission product behavior. Pt. 2

Description

Critical to behavior of fission products from reactor accidents is understanding the nature and properties of the vapor phase species. This study characterizes the stability of the CsI-CsOH vapor phase complex. Vapor pressures were measured with a mass spectrometer. Thermodynamic data were obtained for CsOH(g), Cs2(OH)2(g), CsI(g), Cs2I2(g), and CsI-CsOH(g). Activity coefficients were derived for the CsI-CsOH system. The relative ionization cross-section of CsOH was found to be about ten times the cross-section of CsI(g). Our results suggest that CsI-CsOH fragments to Cs2OH+ and an iodine atom. (orig.)
