Mechanical properties and microstructure of mullite-SiC-ZrO2 particulate composite

  • 1. Central Research Lab., Nihon Cement Co., Ltd., 2-23, 1-chrome, Kiyosumi, Koto-ku, Tokyo 135 (Japan)

Description

The present study has been conducted to clarify the relation between the mechanical properties and the microstructures of the composites fabricated by the pressureless sintering method with fine and high purity Mullite, SiC and ZrO2 powders. It has been found that the fracture toughness of the pressureless-sintered body (containing SiC 20 vol% and ZrO2 20 vol%) increased from 2.2 to 4.8 MPa1/2 by improving the strength at room temperature and maintaining it at 1300 degrees C
