Toward ferric fluoride lithium polymer batteries

Lithium batteries are a means of storing electrochemical energy, occupying a growing share of everyday use. The development of this technology is of prime importance against a backdrop of climate change caused by greenhouse gas emissions, mainly due to the combustion of fossil fuels. However, the development of this technology raises other issues, such as the safety of these batteries and the availability and toxicity of the materials used in their manufacture. In this context, the development of batteries with iron fluorides as electrode material and polymer electrolytes could address these issues. This thesis focuses on the use of these two solutions, electrode and electrolyte, for lithium batteries. Detailed analysis of the evolution of this complex system, using ex-situ and operando X-ray spectroscopy, has enabled us to investigate the electrochemical mechanism of iron fluoride with solid polymer electrolyte. Les batteries au lithium sont un moyen de stockage de l'energie electrochimique, occupant une part grandissante dans les usages quotidiens. Le developpement de cette technologie est de premiere importance dans un contexte de changement climatique cause par les emissions de gaz a effet de serre, majoritairement provoquees par la combustion de ressources fossiles. Toutefois, le developpement de cette technologie fait naitre d'autres problematiques, comme la securite de ces batteries ou la disponibilite et toxicite des materiaux la composant. Dans ce contexte, le developpement de batteries avec fluorures de fer comme materiau d'electrode et avec des electrolytes polymeres pourrait repondre a ces problematiques. Ce travail de these s'interesse a l'utilisation de ces deux solutions, d'electrode et d'electrolyte, pour batteries au lithium. L'analyse fine de l'evolution de ce systeme complexe, par moyens de spectroscopie des rayons X ex-situ et operando, a permis d'approfondir le mecanisme electrochimique du fluorure de fer avec electrolyte solide polymere.
