Measurement of the hyperfine structure of the 31D2, 41D2, 51D2 levels of helium 3

Description

It is well known that, in a discharge in 3He, the nuclear spins in the ground state can be oriented through metastability exchange, by optical pumping of the metastable 2 3S1 atoms. The orientation is transmitted to the other levels excited in the discharge. If the nuclear spins in the ground state are submitted to magnetic resonance, the light emitted from these excited states is modulated at the R.F. field frequency. The degree of modulation is important only near a level crossing, in zero field or in non-zero field. This method has been used to determine the hyperfine structure of the 3 1D2, 4 1D2, 5 1D2 levels. The results are in good agreement with those of previous measurements and with theoretical predictions

Abstract (French)

Dans une decharge dans 3He, on sait qu'on peut orienter les spins nucleaires dans l'etat fondamental, grace aux echanges de metastabilite, en pompant optiquement les atomes metastables 2 3S1. L'orientation est transmise aux autres niveaux excites dans la decharge. Si l'on soumet les spins nucleaires dans l'etat fondamental a la resonance magnetique, la lumiere emise a partir des etats excites est modulee a la frequence du champ R.F. Le taux de modulation n'est important qu'au voisinage du champ nul ou d'un croisement de niveaux en champ non nul. On a determine par cette methode les structures hyperfines des etats 3 1D2, 4 1D2, 5 1D2. Les resultats sont en bon accord avec ceux de mesures anterieures et avec les previsions theoriques
