Hybrid reactor research activities in China

Description

In the framework of Chinese energy supply predictions and technology development related to fission and/or fusion power generation, a review of hybrid reactors research activities and waste transmutation related studies. Advanced reactor program in China is related to high temperature gas reactors, one constructed already, fast breeder reactor under construction, accelerator driven system (ADS) which is being studied since 2001, and fusion-driven hybrid system (FDS) studies of which began since 1986. The fuel breeding blanket design studies performed already were concept based on FEB fusion core and waste transmutation concept based on FEB, ST. Availability and feasibility studies of dual-cooled waste transmutation blanket were performed. Studies related to fusion-driven hybrid system (FDS) were concerned with fuel production related activities and transmutation related activities. Current research and development plans are related to design and fabrication of blanket mockup; performance assessment of FDS, material technology development; integral neutronics experiment; and thermal-hydraulics experiment. Institute of Plasma Physics, Academia Sinica (ASIPP) proposed the following topics for further research: Fusion-driven subcritical hybrid system (FDS); Inter-comparison of various hybrid systems; and codes and data libraries development for neutronics calculations
