An introduction to quarks and partons
Description
The book is in three parts. The first describes the basic quark model ideas (roughly pre-1970 ideas). Some aspects are covered in some detail, for example building up the baryon wavefunctions as a basis for understanding the physics behind the various wavefunction symmetries. In part 2 the parton model (post 1970 ideas) is presented. Electron scattering kinematics is also treated in some detail. The aim is to make the physics clear, in particular the relation between scaling, pointlike particles and absence of lengthscales. More recent developments (to 1979) are summarized in part 3. These include new particles and field theories of weak-electromagnetic and strong interactions. It is intended primarily for undergraduate theoretical physicists and graduate experimental physicists.
