How to Use Tensiometers and Neutron Scattering Technique to Study Rates of Stored and Depleted Water into Soil Layers

  • 1. Soil and Water Dept., Nuclear Res. Center, Atomic Energy Authority, Cairo (Egypt)

Description

This work aims to use the neutron scattering meter and Tensiometers to define rates of soil moisture storage and depletion into layers of Nubarria soil profile in Egypt. This method depends on the use of in situ measurements via neutron moisture meter and soil matric suction using Tensiometers for different soil depths, which can be determined in situ. Hydraulic parameters of Darcy's low in unsaturated case were determined in situ to study soil water flux within the soil profile. Collecting active roots for water absorption and active rooting depth of chickpea were defined from the direction of soil water movement within the soil profile. The investigated data show that depth of collecting active roots for water absorption was at 24 cm depth for before next irrigation, Active rooting depth was at 51 cm depth before next irrigation. Water storage rate was 4, 0.4 and 1.6 mm/hr in 15 -30, 30 -45 and 45 -60 cm layers after irrigation, respectively. As for before the next irrigation 15 -30 cm layer had accumulated rates 0.307 mm/hr resulted from low hydraulic potential. This accumulation will be used by plant. 30 -45 cm layer had water storage also in rate 1.73 mm/hr. 45 -60 cm layer had depleted water with rate 4.5 mm/hr resulted from water absorption by roots and drainage.
