Testicular impact of the treatment with I-131 in patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma

Description
Young patients carriers differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) are treated with high doses of I-131 for much of his life with very good prognosis and projects with paternity. However, there is scarce information on the effect of radioiodine on the male gonad and their future fertility. This therapy may compromise on a temporary and / or definitively the role of the germinal cells. The testicular irradiation depends on the blood flow, the dose of I-131 administered and of the presence or absence of metastasis pelvic near to the gonads. A single dose of 100 mCi of I-131 throws an absorbed dose at gonadal level of 50-150 cGy. It has been reported that absorbed doses of 50 cGy can produce transitory decrease spermatogenesis and higher doses can also affect the function of the Leydig cells
Abstract (Spanish)
Los pacientes jovenes portadores de Carcinoma Diferenciado de Tiroides (CaDT) son tratados con altas dosis de I-131 durante gran parte de su vida con muy buen pronostico y con proyectos de paternidad. Sin embargo, existe escasa informacion sobre el efecto del radioiodo sobre la gonada masculina y su fertilidad futura. Esta terapia puede comprometer en forma transitoria y/o definitiva la funcion de la celula germinal. La irradiacion testicular depende del flujo sanguineo, de la dosis de I-131 administrada y de la presencia o ausencia de metastasis pelvianas cercanas a las gonadas. Una sola dosis de 100 mCi de I-131 arroja una dosis absorbida a nivel gonadal de 50-150 cGy. Se ha reportado que dosis absorbidas de 50cGy pueden producir disminucion transitoria de la espermatogenesis y dosis mayores pueden afectar tambien la funcion de la celula de LeydigAdditional details
