Description

The Sc-Fe-Si system was investigated at 800 deg C by the X-ray diffraction method. In the Sc-Fe system a temperature (lambda1 reversible lambda3) and a concentration (lambda1,lambda3 and lambda2) polymorphism of the Laves phases ScFe2 was discovered along with the Sc7Fe compound. The existence of the Sc3Fe compound was not confirmed. In the Sc-Fe-Si system 14 ternary compounds were discovered. A crystalline structure of 11 of them was established completely or partly. Small additions of scandium stabilize the binary Fe5Si3 compound at 800 deg C, and the additions of silicon stabilize the high-temperature lambda2 phase of the Sc-Fe system. By the character of interaction in the Sc-Fe-Si system, scandium is closer to transition metals (Ir, Ti) than to the rare earth ones
