Influence of polarizations in two-step excitation. Application to cases of parallel and perpendicular polarizations
Description
This work studied the excitation in two stages, polarized in the plane normal to the common axis of propagation of the two excitation beams. The general results have been applied to cases where the two polarizations are rectilinear, parallel or perpendicular. The ratios of the excitation probabilities obtained in these two cases vary from 0.5 to 7 according to the values of the quantum numbers J and F of the doubly excited state, for I = 1/2 and J = 0 in the fundamental state. Chapter I shows the equivalence of the two possible choices of quantization axis in the one-step excitation, by means of the rotation operators expressed in the representation of the angular momentum. Chapter II details the calculation of the polarized two-step excitation of an even isotope. Chapter III gives the results of the excitation in two polarized steps of an odd isotope with a nuclear spin I = 1/2, after some reminders on the probability of excitation in non-polarized light. All these results are applied to the analysis of experimental intensity ratios of second-stage hyperfine components, and a new method for measuring saturation intensities is proposed
