Description
First NMR images demonstrated that NMR could use a CT-like reconstruction to produce images. This technique, called zeugmatography, has been developed to the point where it is producing full three-dimensional images of the head and heart. It is theoretically one of the most efficient imaging methods. Damadian and co-workers used a point scanning technique called field focusing nuclear magnetic resonance (FONAR) and produced early images of a mouse and the first human chest images. Point scanning, although theoretically the least efficient imaging technique, facilitated Damadian's interest in the localized comparison of the T1 relaxation times of normal and tumorous tissues. The general indication of this finding that T1 values are loner in tumors was vigorously contested. A final answer to this problem is not yet evident; however, in animal models the authors have found that the increase of T1 in tumors correlates with increases in water content of the tissue, and other abnormalities that increase water content also show elevated T1
