X-ray measurements and protection, 1913-64

Despite its broad title, this work is actually a chronicle of the National Bureau of Standards effort in this area as seen through the eyes of the author. Dr. Taylor was central to the work of the Bureau in this field. The outstanding contribution of the Bureau was undoubtedly the development of the parallel plate ionization chamber for measurement of medium voltage x-rays, and its international comparison and standardization. As the interest in higher energy x-rays or γ-rays increased, attempts were made to increase ionization chamber size or to resort to pressure chambers.
