Self-similar Z-pinch implosions

Description
Self-similar solutions of MHD fluid equations describing dynamics of Z-pinches are discussed. Three distinct classes of self-similar solutions exist: (1) the non-homogeneous deformation solutions of ideal MHD equations, relevant to the start-up phase of the flow. These describe collapse of shock waves and current-carrying liners on the axis, reflection of the shock waves from the axis, etc.; (2) ideal homogeneous deformation solutions describing the developed phase of the Z pinch dynamics, including its oscillations around an equilibrium state; and (3) dissipation-dominated subsonic solutions describing ''time-dependent Z-pinch equilibria,'' flows like the fiber-initiated high density Z-pinches
