Description

Coolability of a debris bed resulting from a hypothetical severe reactor accident was studied experimentally. The debris bed was modeled with steel spheres by inductive heating. The depth of the debris was 10 cm and the steel spheres had diameters of 1.6, 3.2, 4.8 mm. Freon-113 and methanol were used as coolants. The dryout heat flux in the bed of heated steel spheres was found to be much higher than a similar homogeneous bed. The amount of increase was found to depend strongly on the geometry of the bed
