Climatic variability and thermohaline circulation in the North Atlantic ocean and the Norway sea during upper Quaternary

Description

The variations in the insolation latitudinal distribution are responsible for long term cyclic climatic variations. Recently, more rapid and abrupt climatic changes, with frequencies close to the millennium, have also been observed, and seem to be related to internal oscillations of the climate system, at least during the last glacial period. In order to build reliable predictive models, it is necessary to understand what are the mechanisms involved in the climatic changes, and how they interact. The aim of this work is to study the climate evolution during the last climatic cycle in the North Atlantic area, since it is the location of the thermohaline convection, which transfers important amounts of heat to the European regions. We have focused on the period between 70,000 and 150,000 years (marine isotopic stage 5), because it has been marked by major changes in the insolation distribution. The establishment of a common stratigraphic framework was a crucial step, and was based on the analysis of benthic foraminifera δ18O. This work has shown that sea-ice formations produced a strong local imprint on the Nordic Seas records. The ocean δ18O changes resulting from the global ice volume changes have then been reconstructed for the last 150,000 years. The comparison of these results to the sea level reconstructions obtained from the coral terraces allowed us to establish a sea level curve for the last climatic cycle, and to improve noticeably the absolute time scale of our marine records. Finally, the study of the surface and deep hydrology in the North Atlantic region suggests that the thermal gradient between high and low latitudes, by modifying the water vapor transfers to the Nordic areas, has a major impact on our climate. Abstract (French)

Les modifications de la repartition latitudinale de l'insolation que la Terre recoit du Soleil sont a l'origine de variations cycliques de notre climat. Des oscillations plus rapides et abruptes du climat, de l'ordre du millier d'annees, et dont l'origine semble etre interne au systeme climatique ont egalement ete observees, au moins pour la derniere periode glaciaire. Afin de construire des modeles predictifs fiables, il est essentiel de comprendre quels sont les mecanismes intervenant dans les changements climatiques, et comment ils interagissent entre eux. Le but de ce travail a ete l'etude de l'evolution du climat pendant le dernier cycle climatique dans la region Nord Atlantique, lieu de la convection thermohaline et source de chaleur pour l'Europe. Nous avons concentre notre attention sur la periode comprise entre 70 000 et 150 000 ans (stade isotopique marin 5), car elle a connu de grandes modifications de la repartition de l'insolation. La construction d'un cadre stratigraphique commun aux sites d'etude a ete une etape cruciale, et a ete basee sur l'analyse d'enregistrements de δ18O benthiques. Ce travail a montre la presence d'une forte contribution locale associee aux formations de glace de mer dans les enregistrements des regions nordiques. Nous avons ensuite reconstruit les variations du δ18O de l'ocean liees aux seuls changements du volume de glace depuis 150 000 ans. En comparant nos resultats aux reconstructions du niveau marin d'apres les terrasses coralliaires, nous avons etabli une courbe des variations du niveau marin au cours du dernier cycle climatique et ameliore sensiblement l'echelle de temps absolue de nos enregistrements. Enfin, l'etude de l'evolution de l'hydrologie de surface et profonde dans la region Nord Atlantique suggere que le gradient thermique entre hautes et basses latitudes, en modifiant les transports d'humidite vers les regions polaires, a un impact essentiel sur l'evolution du climat.
