Description

Polymer recycling can affect its properties due to successive processing steps, whose shear effect and high temperatures induce changes in polymer structure. The present study evaluates the effect of successive extrusions on the structure of high density polyethylene (HDPE) through FTIR-ATR and XRD analysis. After five extrusion cycles, under two different processing conditions, no appreciable changes were observed that allowed to conclude about the main mechanism of degradation by the FTIR technique. However, the increase in crystallinity found by the XRD technique indicates the predominance of chain scission in the degradation of the polymer. (author)
