Optical supernovae and the Hubble constant
Description
Three ways to use optical supernovae to estimate the value of the Hubble constant are reviewed by the author: (1) Type I supernovae as standard candles, (2) the Baade-Wesselink method applied to Type II and Type I supernovae, and (3) the /sup 56/Ni-radioactivity method for SNe I. It is likely that H/sub 0/ ≅ 50 - 60 km s/sup -1/ Mpc/sup -1/. If ''ordinary'' Type I supernovae are completely-disrupting carbon-oxygen white dwarfs near the Chandrasekhar mass, the /sup 56/Ni-method provides a rigorous lower limit, H/sub 0/≥40, and a firm upper limit, H/sub 0/≤70 km s/sup -1/ Mpc/sup -1/
