Evaluation of position sensitive detectors (Position sensitive proportional counter and photo-diode array) for x-ray spectral measurement

Recently in the research fields of nuclear fusion and X-ray astronomy, the high resolution X-ray spectroscopes for quantitatively and qualitatively analyzing X-ray spectra have been developed. Position sensitive proportional counter (PSPC) and photo-diode array (PDA) are excellent in their temporal resolution and positional resolution, accordingly, they have been used as the detectors for such X-ray spectroscopes. In order to evaluate the performance of PSPCs and PDAs, in this research, a high resolution X-ray spectroscope was used. Besides, as the standard detector, a scintillation counter was used. The details of the counting efficiency of this scintillation counter are known in the literature 6. The experimental setup, the measurement with a PSPC, the measurement with a PDA and the spectral resolution are reported. The spectral resolution of the PSPC was somewhat inferior, but this fact is largely dependent on the positional resolution, therefore, there is the plenty room for the improvement. Concerning the measurement of X-ray photons, the PSPC and the PDA were compared. (K.I.)
