Two-photon backgrounds for the intermediate mass Higgs boson
Description
One method which has been proposed for detecting a standard model Higgs boson in the intermediate mass region is to search for the decay H0 → γγ. The background to this signal is usually estimated on the basis of the qanti q → γγ and gg → γγ subprocesses. We have found that there are significant contributions coming from two-body subprocesses involving photon bremsstrahlung. Estimates are given for the signal to background ratio as a function of the Higgs mass. Possible methods of reducing this background are also discussed. (orig.)
