The clinical value of histoautoradiography during radiotherapy of the cervical carcinoma

Tissue samples from 35 patients with cervical carcinoma, stage I up to stage III were incubated with H-3-thymidine before and after a test dose of irradiation, as well as several times during treatment until application of the full irradiation dose and the percentage of labelled cells was determined autoradiographically. An important marked decrease in labelling index (subject to individual verification), was found during radiotherapy. The duration of observation was more than two years in the cases of 27 patients. Close correlation was found between the decrease in labelling index and the corresponding clinical course of the disease. (orig.)

Abstract (German)

Bei 35 Patientinnen mit invasivem Zervixkarzinom Stadium I bis III, die eine Strahlentherapie erhielten, wurden praetherapeutisch, nach einer Testdosis und mehrmals waehrend der Behandlung Biopsien aus dem Tumorgewebe entnommen und mit H-3-Thymidin autoradiographisch der Markierungsindex bestimmt. Unter der Strahlentherapie ergaben sich - individuell unterschiedlich - entscheidende Aenderungen des Markierungsindex. Bei 27 Frauen lag die Therapie laenger als zwei Jahre zurueck: es konnte festgestellt werden, dass der Rueckgang des Markierungsindex in guter Korrelation mit dem anschliessenden klinischen Verlauf stand.
