Calibration of a Van de Graff accelerator using resonance reaction and minimisation of systematic uncertainty

  • 1. Reactor Physics Division, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam (India)

Description

We used the resonance reaction 27Al(p,γ)28Si to calibrate a Van de Graff accelerator to measure the energy of the proton. The energy of the proton beam had many systematic components of uncertainty and we used the technique of determinant inequalities to estimate upper and lower bounds for these systematic uncertainties. The knowledge of the bounds would help the experimentalists to design a magnetic sensor for accelerators with reduced systematic uncertainty. (author)
