New method of 201Tl production from 203Tl-targets

Description
Our previous technique (Malinin et al., 1984) of 201Tl production from 203Tl-targets irradiated by about 29 MeV energy protons (96.9% metallic 203Tl) was based upon 201Pb isolation by co-precipitation with SrSO4 from sulphuric acid solution. It was then followed by the extraction of no-carrier-added 201Tl, accumulated after an appropriate Pb-fraction holdup time, from hydrochloric solution using butyl acetate. The re-extraction of 201Tl was carried out in a sulphurous acid solution which was later evaporated, the residue being dissolved in a physiological with NaHCO3 added. We have improved this technology by substituting the Pb precipitation stage by that of extracting macroquantities (up to 3 g) of Tl from sulphuric acid solutions using butyl acetate. (author)
