Radiolysis of modified silica

  • 1. Moskovskij Gosudarstvennyj Univ., Moscow (USSR). Khimicheskij Fakul'tet

Description

The effect of gamma-radiation on silica hydrothermally modified by methanol (1) and tetra-N-methylammoniumhydroxide (2) is studied. The ESR method is used to identify radiolysis products. It is found that radiolysis of silica modified by 1 occurs with the formation of radicals SiOCH2 grafted to a silica matrix, and for the silica hydrothermally modified by 2 SiOCH2 and SiNHCH2 grafted radicals as well as methyl radicals sorbed by a silica matrix are radiolysis products. The formation of SiNHCH2 radicals is explained by the radiolysis of the N-C bond with the following hydrogen migration from carbon atom to nitrogen atom
