Description
Following a five years construction period (2000-2005), the Karlsruhe high level waste vitrification plant (VEK) (Verglasungsanlage Karlsruhe) is now in the commissioning phase. The VEK vitrification process is based on an advanced liquid-fed ceramic melter developed by the Institut fuer Nukleare Entsorgung (INE). The safety features ensure a minimization of radioactive effluents and emissions as well as resistance against external impacts from potential earthquakes of aircraft accident. Cold test operation is foreseen for the second half of 2006, with the subsequent hot operation phase in 2007/2008. (orig.)
