Overall scale-model simulation of mixed-convection flow

Description

Mixed convection is often a major source of difficulty for industrial projects. Where three-dimensionality or non-stationary conditions rule out the use of a mathematical model, overall scale-model simulation provides an ideal means of investigation, but only if dimensions, and therefore Reynolds number, can be reduced. This type of simulation requires considerable caution, however, especially where heat or material transfers causing density differences affect the fluid through the walls. Various choice-determining factors are discussed, especially as regards their effect on the choice of a model fluid. The effect of given Peclet number distortions is investigated against the general background of Froude similarity. Diagrams applicable to various industrial conditions illustrate the high-variable nature of simulation procedure. This can be reduced quite appreciably by artificial wall-roughening

Abstract (French)

Dans les projets industriels, les ecoulements de convection mixte constituent bien souvent des obstacles dont l'etude est particulierement difficile a aborder. Lorsque les tridimensionnalites ou les aspects instationnaires eliminent le modele mathematique, la simulation globale sur modele a echelle reduite est un moyen ideal lorsque l'on peut se permettre une reduction les dimensions et donc du nombre de Reynolds. Cette simulation est cependant delicate surtout lorsque les transferts de chaleur ou de matiere qui engendrent les differences de densites arrivent jusqu'au fluide a travers des parois. On examine les differents criteres du choix et en particulier leur incidence sur la nature du fluide utilise sur le modele. Dans le cadre general de la similitude de Froude, on etudie l'effet de distortions donnees du nombre de Peclet. Des diagrammes appliques a diverses situations industrielles montrent la qualite tres variable de la simulation. L'artifice d'une rugosite de paroi permet d'ameliorer sensiblement celle-ci
